DOT and CrucianPoint, LLC Launch Official USVI Smartphone App

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, August 3, 2011 – The Department of Tourism (DOT) and St. Croix-based software design and consulting company, CrucianPoint, LLC, are pleased to announce the launch of the official smartphone app of the USVI Department of Tourism. Originally developed by CrucianPoint, the newly branded and enhanced app is the Department’s latest marketing tool to promote the destination and improve the visitor experience.
“With one out of two persons estimated to own a smartphone in the U.S. by the end of the year, travelers are increasingly using smartphone apps to find real-time travel information on the go,” said Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty. “We are excited to take advantage of this technology that will make planning and enjoying a USVI vacation even more convenient and fun.” Commissioner Nicholson-Doty added, “We are equally delighted to partner with a local company possessing both the technical savvy and local know-how to produce a high quality tourism product. This is a prime example of the sort of synergy the Department of Tourism would like to foster between our tourism industry and local entrepreneurs as we strive to develop a more sustainable tourism industry.”
The USVI app is yet another channel for potential travelers to learn about the destination.  Users will be able to bookmark points of interests and plan their trips ahead of time accessing up-to-date information about things to do in the islands. Once the app is downloaded to the smartphone, users can access USVI information anytime and anywhere without an active Internet connection, making it easier to plan their vacations. Once on vacation, the user will have one-touch access to local business phone numbers and can locate businesses on a real-time map, all in the palm of their hands. The app’s special features may vary depending on the type of smartphone, but all platforms will allow users to share favorite places by email or on Facebook, creating interactive experiences between users and other potential travelers.
The app is free and can be downloaded at the App Store to iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices (with iOS version 3.1 or higher), Android smartphones (with Android OS version 1.6 or higher) and Blackberry smartphones (Blackberry OS version 5.0 or higher). An enhanced Blackberry version will be available later in the month.
All local businesses currently listed on the Department of Tourism web site are automatically featured on the app free of charge, however, those businesses wishing to advertise on the app may contact CrucianPoint at 1-855-GET-MYVI (1-855-438-6984) for advertising rates.
