Detailed Information

In the Scale House built in 1856, hogsheads of sugar and puncheons of rum were weighed before export. The weighmaster’s office was on the first floor and soldiers were quartered upstairs. This building replaced an 1840 wooden weighing house. The huge scales, still visible as you enter the building, were also used to weigh imports. The building now functions as the National Park Service Information Center and Visitors’ Bureau.
