This mission church was founded by Moravian brethren in the 1750s to minister to enslaved Africans, conveying useful skills as well as salvation. The parish house, or manse, was built in the 1830s as both a school and dwelling. It was established during the middle of the 18th century following in the tradition of earlier missions, such as New Herrnhut and Nisky on St.Thomas and Bethany on St.John. The mission was a place of worship and active plantation with its church members principally recruited through the laboring population of the estate. For many years this mission had served as a center of Moravian activities including the training of parishioners in trades and in the fundamentals of reading of parishioners in trades and in the fundamentals of reading and writing.
