Constructed in 1680, Fort Christian was built to defend the Danish settlement. Fort Christian is the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands; it has stood as a sentry overlooking the Charlotte Amalie Harbor for over 300 years. The imposing fort with walls 3 to 6 feet thick was built to defend the Danish settlement and the harbor from hostile marauders. This National Historic Landmark building is on St. Thomas and also served as the governor’s residence, a place of worship, a police station and now a museum. The fort is temporarily closed for renovations.
