Moravian Church History Site – Coral Bay, St. John
Step into the spiritual history of St. John at the site of the historic Moravian mission in Coral Bay. Established in the mid-1700s as part of the church’s expansion from Bethany, this site reflects a deep legacy of faith and resilience. By 1756, Moravian missionaries began preaching at the Carolina estate, with the full support of the plantation overseer, who welcomed the Christian education of enslaved people.
In 1757, Cornelius—a baptized slave and church helper—arrived to work as a mason and soon began leading weekly and Sunday worship services for the enslaved community. His teachings drew large gatherings and helped establish Carolina as a vital center of Moravian religious life on the island.
Visitors today can reflect on this powerful legacy while exploring Coral Bay’s quiet beauty and cultural richness. This site is a must-see for those interested in the island’s spiritual and social history.
