African Trickster Tales Throughout the Diaspora, in this three-day series acting teacher and community organizer, Sayeeda Carter will explore the exciting, phenomenal and crafty, literary trope of a trickster. Taking the young people through an extensive look at the trickster tales in African, Caribbean and African America story telling. Students will learn stage presence, movement and pantomime, improvisation and acting techniques. Students will unpack what this character stood for in perilous times and sticky situations adding cunning, intrigue and humor in every situation.
Students will perform for family and friends July 25!
Director: Sayeeda Carter
Sayeeda Carter is a St. Croix, Virgin Islands-based teacher and theater artist. Carter is entering her third decade as a public school educator and is a passionate person who encourages students on their path to excellence. In addition to getting the privilege to occasionally act or direct with CCT (A Raisin in the Sun, Mountaintop, Blues for an Alabama Sky, Bee Luther Hatchie, and a Calico Cat: Colorful Callaloo) , she also runs a social justice and theater based company called ACT OUT ENSEMBLE: Theatre of the Oppressed Virgin Islands. Over the years she has partnered with the museum, creating the space for theater and social justice advocacy. She has shared her expertise and supported Film Over Gun Violence, Give a Youth a Mic with Tai Allen, along with You: The Promise of the Diaspora with visual artist Chole Duplesis. Her ultimate goal is using acting and advocacy to contribute to the dismantling of inequitable systems and helping us ALL live more freely.
